Maureen Hackett, M.D., a board certified Forensic Psychiatrist is an expert in psychiatric issues involving the law. Dr. Hackett provides objective consultations on civil and criminal issues to third parties such as courts, attorneys and employers. Dr. Hackett provides confidential consultations to organizations experiencing problems of executive and employee distress and concerns about fitness for duty. Mental health issues in the workplace frequently involve questions regarding disability, worker's compensation and allegations of harassment, discrimination or wrongful termination. Dr. Hackett has extensive experience consulting to organizations regarding these and other issues. Her experience with psychiatric issues and organizations began during her psychiatric residency training and active duty service as a psychiatrist in the United States Air Force. It was in her capacity as a military psychiatrist that Dr. Hackett accomplished fitness for duty evaluations and level of impairment determinations for individuals working in a wide spectrum of roles including technicians, pilots and high ranking command officers.
In addition to Dr. Hackett's work involving questions in the civil and military arena, she has evaluated over a thousand individuals involved in the criminal justice system and opined on questions of their competency to stand trial and their sanity at the time of their offense. Fellowship training in Forensic Neuropsychiatry at Tulane University accelerated her opportunities to evaluate and treat mentally ill individuals in the legal system. She continued to build on this experience with her prior employment at the Minnesota Security Hospital. As a member of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law and its Ethics committee, Dr. Hackett writes guidelines for the ethical practice of Forensic Psychiatry. She consults on questions involving ethical issues and psychiatric practice. She has published and presented; "Physician Patient Boundary Violations," and she has provided consultation and testimony to professional boards of medical practice on boundary issues. Dr. Hackett is a member of the Minnesota Psychiatric Society’s ethics committee. The committee evaluates complaints of ethical misconduct of its members and interprets the ethical standards of medical practice.
Dr. Hackett graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois. Following her psychiatric residency training and active duty Air Force service in England, she completed the Forensic Neuropsychiatry Fellowship at Tulane University. She has a private practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Hackett teaches the Psychiatry and the Law Clinic at the William Mitchell College of Law. This clinic provides pro bono consultations to attorneys as a joint venture of the psychiatry residency and the William Mitchell law students and faculty.
